I have always cherished my family’s recipe albums. I used to love rummaging through all the handwritten cards while I watched my grandmas bake. I lost both of them very young but my memories of them are so vivid whenever I read their handwriting. Every time I make a recipe that’s been handed down to me from family, and other cherished people. The memories just come flooding in for me. For a brief moment, they are truly tangible. It is as nostalgic as watching old family videos or looking through photo albums. It’s one of the ways I’ve coped with living away from family for the last 7 years. It’s meant missing so many milestones from special moments to missing funerals, and not being able to say goodbye. It’s been my way to keep them close to my heart.
One of my favourite hobbies is collecting old recipe cards. Old-fashioned, handwritten tattered, and stained paper. There’s something so special about beloved family recipes. Scratched out ingredients with notes like, “Aunt Shirley hates raisins”. Each recipe is a piece of family history worth holding onto and sharing.
Chances are you have a few of these recipes hanging around. Maybe it is time to bring them out and rediscover a few magical memories of your own! or try some of my family’s recipes.
